Over the past decades, over-exploitation of wild populations of rosewood trees in the Amazon forests has threatened the survival of the species. However, more than two decades ago in a region located on the north-eastern Peruvian Amazon, the first sustainable rosewood experience came to life when farmers began to plant wild rosewood trees on their plots. As farmers do with their own crops, they established rosewood plantations under a balanced agroforestry system. They combined rosewood plants with crops such as pineapples, fruit trees, palm trees and timber trees. We began our work with local farmers in 2014 helping them acquire legal land-tenure. After this, we provided technical know-how for the inventory of their trees, procured harvesting permits and received CITES export permits.
